NEWCOMERS to Tamworth eager to secure a general practitioner at the city’s soon-to-opened Peel Health Care will have to wait until the centre is completed before registering as a patient.
The North West Slopes Division of General Practice and The Leader have received numerous calls from prospective patients wondering how they can sign up at the practice in advance.
Division chief executive officer Graeme Kershaw said he understood the anxiety felt by those unable to find a GP, but urged patience.
“We’re still in the middle of the development process but renovations are reaching their final stages,” Mr Kershaw said.
“We are now in the process of acquiring office equipment and computer systems. We will be publicising our opening date and details of how to register at the practice closer to the date.”
Mr Kershaw said the centre would take bookings a week before it was officially opened.
Last year the division came up with the idea of introducing a medical centre to Tamworth in response to a perceived GP shortage in the city.
The plan was to attract GPs by offering them financial and employment flexibility.
Financial support from Tamworth Regional Council, the community and the Federal Government has enabled the division to set up an interim office on Peel St.
Dr Jenny May has been appointed office GP academic and Lyn Stewart, practice manager. It’s hoped the centre will be up and running in August.
