Students cheer on four-legged representatives

THE ARRIVE alive Eastern Uni Games goes to the dogs tonight.

Tamworth Greyhound Racing Club’s local track will cater for not only a 10 race program from 7pm tonight but coverage of the State of Origin rugby league as well as about 500 expected student athletes.

Each of the universities will be sponsoring a race.

At the end of the night the final race, the Uni Games 5th Grade Stake (457m), will have special significance, Cumberland Student Guild representative Anna Henderson said yesterday.

“Each of the universities will be sponsoring a race and the top sponsor universities will have a contender in the final race,” she said.

“Each of the dogs in the final race will compete under the university mascot of those campuses.”

It means Tamworth-trained Deejay Larricki will compete under the alias “Cumbo Beaver”, the beaver being Cumberland University’s mascot.

Deejay Larricki is trained in Tamworth by Debbie Jordan but is yet to win at his home track and was unplaced at Armidale at his last start.

Henderson also warned students to arrive early for the greyhound State of Origin night.

“The track itself has a small capacity and will hold around five hundred people so interested punters are advised to get in early,” she said.
