New Glen Severn GM leaving TRC

HEIN Basson, a former South African citizen, and until Thursday acting director for people services with the Tamworth Regional Council, has been appointed general manager of the Glen Innes Severn Council.

He will take up his appointment on August 1 and succeed acting general manager Robert Langford, who was the general manager of the former Severn Shire Council which merged last year with the Glen Innes Municipal Council.

Mr Basson, 44, said he was looking forward to his new post and had been tremendously happy in his professional and private life since coming to Australia five years ago with wife Stephani and daughter Steani, 16.

He came to the north-west in August 2002 to take up the position of general manager of the former Manilla Shire Council, now part of the Tamworth Regional Council, which he joined last year.

He said the Glen Severn Council, headed by mayor Robert Schroder, had nine councillors, a staff of 152 and a population of about 10,000.

Apart from Glen Innes, major communities in the Glen Severn region included Deepwater, Emmaville, Red Range and Glencoe.

“I’m sad to leave the Tamworth region because the council has an excellent staff and the people have been extremely friendly and

helpful,” he said.

“But I applied for the Glen Severn position because I thought it represented a good challenge.”

Cr Schroder said his council had unanimously voted for Mr Basson as its preferred candidate earlier this week.

Mr Basson had impressed the councillors with his extensive local government experience, good leadership skills, change management experience, commonsense approach and his strategic and community focus.

“Mr Basson is well equipped to assist council in successfully merging two organisational cultures into one, as well as adding value to council’s operations on a continuing basis,” Cr Schroder said.
