League makes Games comeback

RUGBY league made a comeback to the Arrive alive Eastern University Games yesterday after missing last year’s program.

It can also lay claim to having the best facilities of all 19 sports in Tamworth this week.

The Games’ League 7’s are being played at Tamworth’s Scully Park which is regarded as the best sporting facility in the region with five teams getting their first run there

Last year’s problems stemmed from a lack of volunteers but ARL Development and the CRL have come on board this year.

“Last year they couldn’t get anyone to run it,” ARL Development officer and Games rugby league manager Paul Davis said.

“It’s a good opportunity to promote rugby league in the universities because it’s usually rugby (union) dominated.

“But I think most of these teams play in the university competition down there.”

The players are certainly happy to be here too and they’re already enjoying the small but competitive

“I don’t know what happened last year,” Sydney Uni captain Ben Williams said.

“But the five teams that are here are really wound up. They’re really excited about it. It’s a good competition and well organised.

“We’re confident without being silly about it.

“We’re very happy to beat Macquarie today.

“We’re looking forward to the competition.”

Williams said league normally plays second fiddle to union so he’s chuffed to be playing at Scully Park.

“We’re really happy to get this field,” he said.

“In university sport we’re used to being second behind union so it’s fantastic to get this facility.”
