WHEN you take on the job as chairperson of a Relay for Life committee, it’s a big
Hayley Albertson held down that role for two consecutive Tamworth relay events, in 2002 and 2004, and helped her community raise $301,785 in the process.
Hayley, together with other regional representatives, were recognised for their enormous contribution to the cause of fundraising for cancer research at the State Relay for Life conference in Sydney.
Cancer Council north-west regional office staffers Megan Dixon, Natalie Flemming and Olivia Morgan attended the conference, where New England Relay for Life manager Bruce Whan received a medallion for retired New England Relay for Life chair, Don Thomas.
The New England Relay for Life also earned a plaque, recognising its cumulative total of $265,610.
Gunnedah Relay for Life deputy chair Harvey Stoneman collected a cup presented to the 2004-2005 Relay for Life with the highest fundraising per capita in the State. Gunnedah Relay for Life on April 29-30 raised $107,636.11, with a population of 12,000 ($8.97 per capita).
The Cancer Council’s Megan Dixon said when the organisation’s CEO Andrew Penman delivered a speech at the conference outlining research priorities, including an increase in the research budget (from $7 million to $10 million). He said that was possible, largely due to the tremendous support of Relay for Life events.
Hayley Albertson couldn’t be in Sydney for the presentation, so The Cancer Council’s Relay for Life State co-ordinator Danielle Taylor made a special trip to Tamworth to present her with her medallion.
“It was a really nice surprise,” Hayley said.
“As I’ve served as chair for two consecutive Relay for Life events, it’s time to step down, and let someone else take on that role.
“All I can say is what a great experience it was for me personally to be chair of the Tamworth Relay for Life.”
